Background of Founder

Mawusi Nudekor Awity is the Founder and Executive Director of Network of Women in Growth (NEWIG), Ghana. She served previously as the National President of Business and Professional Women (BPW), Ghana at a period when the BPW saw massive growth in membership.

Mawusi Awity is a Gender Activist, Social Entrepreneur and Small Business Development Expert who is into the development of the entrepreneurial skills of women in the rural areas. She works for other NGOs as an Entrepreneurial Skills Development Resource Person. She is also the Women and Children’s Affairs Coordinator of International Centre for Conflict and Human Rights Analysis (ICCHRA)

She holds a degree in Master of Fine Arts (MFA), Costume Design at University of Ghana. To develop her career, she did courses in Advanced Entrepreneurship and Human Resource Development at The University of Ghana School of Business. She has also participated in quite a number of career development training programmes such as Gender Analysis and Community Work Practice, Leadership Capacity Building, Women and Politics, and NGOs Management.

Currently Mawusi travels extensively in Ghana to teach various entrepreneurial skills. She has established two Entrepreneurial Development Centres that runs training programmes in seventeen entrepreneurial disciplines which include textiles, soap and beads making from local materials. She also speaks regularly on a local radio station (Volta Star) and at seminars on a variety of women's empowerment issues.

NEWIG provides specialist advice and help to a wide range of clients in the area of small scale enterprise development. The organisation is also into Gender mainstreaming advocacy and other Women's rights programmes.
